Ego Theory vs Bundle Theory

Ego Theory vs Bundle Theory Derek Parfit discusses two separate theories of personal identity, the Ego theory and the Bundle theory. The common question between these two theories is What is a person? In this paper, I will introduce the Ego Theory and the Bundle Theory, then I will go over Parfits teletransportation example. I will explain what Parfit and the Ego Theorist disagree about when it comes to teletransportation. Then I will argue in order to defend the Ego Theory and explain why I feel it is more persuasive. To begin with, I will discuss the foundation of the Ego Theory. This theory defines a person as a single unified subject of experiences.  In other words, this theory believes there is something in this world that is you and that thing is basic. Mental events exist (such as memories, sensations, emotions, desires, experiences, etc.) but are not basic. The basis of what makes up a person is something other than those mental events. This theory states that a persons continual life is described through the purpose of a specific subject of experiences, a person is an ego (unit basic quality) that a bunch of experiences happen to. On the other hand, the Bundle Theory is very different, it believes that we are not a particular subject of experiences, but a bundle. The foundation of this theory is that mental events exist but they are basic. A Bundle theorist believes there is no unit that is a person that exists in the world.  A person is just a bundle or collection of mental events. These bundle of ideas are attached to a person. We organize our notions about what is in the world by categorizing different things ad giving them a label. People decided to call the idea of what makes up a person a person. We give notions their meaning using language. This is human beings basic way of organizing and defining things in the world depending on their relation, but it is our creation. Parfit agrees with the Bundle Theory and goes on to argue that  we have defined what a person is incorrectly. Parfit goes on to discuss a scenario that involves teletransportation. He discusses a device called the teletransporter, which can read the design of a persons material while destroying it, then transfer the information to Mars at the speed of light. The receiver reads this information creating an exact copy of your material there. Parfit argues that you will die during this process, however you will have a replica of yourself who will pick up where you left off with your life. The replica will be someone who will be exactly similar to you, but it will not actually be you. It will have all your attributes such as your look, personality, memories, etc. This occurrence raises questions regarding whether the replica would be the same person as you, and hence what truly makes a person what they are. Both the Ego and Bundle theories agree that you will die during this process of teletransportation and that the replica created will not be you. They disagree why the replica will not be the same person. The Ego theory believes the replica created on Mars is not you because it is just a copy of you. No one who will exist in the future would have my ego, no one in the future will be this particular subject of experiences. In other words, no one in the future will ever be me. A replica by definition is not the same as you, its a reproduction of you. Destroying the person teletransported does not somehow make the replica of that person the same. What makes a person is their ego. A person that believes in the Ego theory would be crazy for getting in a teletransporter because it would destroy them. On the other hand, the reason the Bundle theory believes the replica created on Mars is not the same as you is because it argues there is no self, there is no such thing as a person being teletransported. There are only ideas and when your collection of ideas is teleported, your collection of ideas will disappear and a new set of ideas will appear. The replica created will have the experience of knowing what the person teletransported is like, what memories they have experienced, what emotions they process, etc. but it is not the same as actually experiencing those things. The person teletransported has memories because that person created them in a specific way. Making a replica of those memories will still not be the same as actually having those memories personally. So a person that believes in the Bundle theory would have no problem getting in the teletransporter as opposed to the Ego theory. Parfit then goes on to assert, Ordinary survival is about as bad as being destroyed and having a Replica.  What Parfit is trying to say is that teletransportation is just as bad as ordinary survival. If we believe in the Ego Theory we are worried about nonsense, because the way we perceive what defines a person is incorrect. He believes we  do not understand what we are and that our continued existence should not really matter to us. Once we understand that we are just a bundle of ideas, it should not matter whether that bundle of ideas lives or dies. In my opinion the Ego theorys line of reasoning is much more persuasive. I believe there is something special that makes each and every person different, which we call the soul. Our  consciousness is the indicator there exists a soul. We are rational beings that have a conscience which tells us right from wrong.  Also, there is something that is the foundation of a person that existed before we were born and that carries on after we die. We can decide whether we want to behave or act in a certain way, hence we have free will. All those things were in existence before we were born, they are installed in our genetic makeup.  Ãƒâ€šÃ‚  I believe that in order for something to exist, something else must have caused it. Our genetic make up did not just appear out of nowhere, we were created by an external force. I believe that the soul is the basis for that existence.  The soul is beyond the range of the senses of the ego, but is a part of the ego.

George Washington Carver Essay -- essays research papers

George Washington Carver George Washington Carver was born in Diamond, Missouri at about 1865 as a slave child on Moses and Susan’s farm. Born and raised by his mother Mary, George was always having a whooping cough. One cold night, night raiders or slave robbers, came and took Mary and George from their home. The Carvers hired their neighbor, John Bentley, to go and find Mary and George. When John returned he had only brought back George and said that his mother could not be found. This was the beginning of George Washington Carver’s life. Since George was a very sick child and always having a whooping cough, he was given the job of working around the house and his favorite job, working in the garden. When George was not tending the garden or doing house chores he was always roaming the nearby woods and streams. He explored anything unusual such as reptile and insects. George kept his own frog collection and geological finds in a place where nobody could find as he would watch them progress. He had his own nursery in the woods and learned how to turn sick plants to healthy plants. This helped him be friendly with his neighbors and gained him the name "plant doctor." George had his own playmates to play childhood games with. Though his parents and playmates were white, he developed a strong friendship with most everybody and continued contact with them even after he left his hometown. The nighttime was about the same as everybody’s, except George and his brother went out to explore while the elders were asleep. During the night he would observe plants and also have fun riding sheep until punished by his parents. George learned very quickly. He mastered everything that was taught to him. This life style helped him become aware of his special talents before the difference of his skin color. Having white friends and white parents, George was excepted by anybody he came into contact with. He had a strong religious faith. There was no official religion for him, but he attended a little Locust Grove Church. While attending this church, he received religious practicing from a large variety of Methodist, Baptist, Campbellite, and Presbyterian circuit preachers. This gave George an unorthodox and nondenominational faith that would stay with him for the rest of his life. Part of that faith was a deep belief in revelation being give... ... nutritional value and could be used in cooking and baking. Over the years he invented many useful ways to use peanuts. Patron-Artist Relations in the Renaissance :: essays research papers fc

Patron-Artist Relations in the Renaissance   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The subject of artist-patron relations has been a touchy one since the beginning of the phenomenon. Nowadays it does not take such great precedence, as the artist leans more toward a personal, individual type of art typical of freelance. Serious commissions exist only in public art and architecture, where the needs and feelings of a large group are considered. Artist and patron must work out a compromise as to what is acceptable and also respects the aims of the artist. The patron in this case generally has the last word, as demonstrated by Richard Serra’s â€Å"Tilted Arc† controversy in the mid-80s where the artist’s piece was actually removed from its site because of public objection. However, nowadays the artist is insured against such damages, which was not the case in the beginning of the Renaissance, when artists were just starting to make a name for themselves. At this time, artists still depended greatly on patronage for a living and fought to distinguish themselves from the guild system. They still succumbed to religious guidelines and subject matter which generally limited their exploration of more personal means of expression, but with the rise of secular art collectors such as the Medici, we see a more modern artist-patron relationship emerging. By so distinguishing themselves in their field, patrons gave them certain leeway in commissions. Patrons and artists worked together, the patron outlining material, size, and general subject matter, but leaving aesthetic decisions concerning composition up to the best judgment of the artist--- the master--- himself.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Although there is evidence of a lord-servant type of relationship between the patron and artist in several documents--- Domenico Venenziano writes to a lead Florentine patron, speaking of his â€Å"low condition† and how â€Å"duty-bound† he is to the patron ; Matteo de’ Pasti writes to his patron about specific details concerning the subject matter of a work, referring to himself as the patron’s â€Å"least servant† who wishes to obey his â€Å"master† ; Fra Filippo Lippi writes to Cosimo de’ Medici that he is â€Å"here entirely to be a slave to you† --- one must remember that Italy was still working out final kinks in a new middle-class-minded capitalist system, and dredges of the medieval system of feudalism still influenced aristocratic patrons. The artist could be building up trust and good relations so that he may be referred to other commissions and

How to reduce student stress(time, environment) Essay

Manage time wisely Student feeling stress when they are no enough time to do their work. Student always like to do the last minute work, because they didn’t plan well for their time. And also student lazy to do their job early, they feel that they can finish at the end, but when the due date was come, they have to rush and finish the job in the limited time. Most of the last minute job was not as good as the job start early. Few ways that student can do to manage their time well, example like create their own timetable Most of the students always forget what they have to do because they didn’t plan at all. Student should create their own timetable to arrange their time, example like week to start to do the assignment, make sure they have enough time to complete the job well before the due date; time to start study for their exam, if student got enough time to prepare for their exam, they can gain a more good result. Result also one of the reason cause student stress, all the source of str ess was related if student did not handle well. Besides that, student should jot down the list to do of the day. Example like what homework that lecturer given, or others important task should be finish, so they won’t miss out the important things. With the list to do, student can clearly know that what they going to do and can evaluate how they spending the time. Of course, while the time was arrange properly, student will found that they have a lot of time to do other things after they finish they tasks and work; they can arrange for others activity to take a break, example like sport activity they like, club society activity, have a high tea with friends, shopping, movie and so on. Always plan well, work hard to play harder, and must have appropriate time for rest, then the stress will far away from them. Some factors will influence the comfortable of environment, example like noise, music, lighting, and temperature. For sure a quite place is suitable for study, some of the people need a totally quite environment to  study, but some people prefer have some music. The soft music can reconcile the mood of student and let them feel relax or not too tension. The lighting was also important to create a good environment to study, too harsh bright light was no suitable but too soft light will cause student feel sleepy. The lightness should in a moderate level to create the most suitable environment. Lastly the temperature, too hot or too cold both can make people feel uncomfortable. Some place was recommended as comfortable environment to study, the library, a peaceful coffee shop, bedroom, and a draughty balcony. People also can influence a comfortable study environment. Some students prefer a group study than individual, because they feel lonely and can’t stand off being alone, they need others friends accompany and they can have a discussion with friends when they have any question. Commentary for a Piece of Original Writing Essay

For my first piece of original writing I intend to create a piece primarily written for entertainment however, I also want to portray an interest into historical and political persuasions. I aim to write this piece for an audience of teenagers to young adult who are aged from around fifteen to twenty-five and are male, I also wish to identify with those interested in political thrillers within this age range. The genre of which shall be a short fiction story consisting chiefly of narrative and written in the third person. I picture this piece as being one of a collection of short stories concerned with the political-thriller fiction sub-genre. Despite being a fiction text I aim to tie in real world non-fiction. I was inspired to write a story of this nature after watching Luc Besson’s ‘The Professional’, alongside reading material from Robert Harris, such as ‘Archangel’, ‘Fatherland’ and ‘Enigma’. I had previous experience reading this genre and being a big fan of Robert Ludlum I wanted to emulate the thrill I experienced from his work, in my own. To gain a firmer understanding of the style I would be pursuing I began to view examples of historical references from encyclopedias and journals and I also read books of historical sub-genre. This is my final draft of this piece and I have made various alterations from the previous drafts to enhance it. In general the changes were simple things such as correcting spelling and punctuation, slightly more significant was the rewording of concluding paragraphs to make it tidier and read or flow better. The most salient modification was trimming the use of figurative language; its use brings visual framework to the piece however overdoing it resulted in an awkward read. The changes I have made were a result of feedback I had attained from my friends, family and potential audiences who read my first drafts and gave me their honest opinions regarding it. I consider the changes I have made prior to completion have certainly improved the final draft of this piece; however, if I were to revise it once again I could continue to make improvements. This piece has been constructed to exploit the expectations of the reader by diverging from the conventions of traditional story telling; beginning, middle and end, respectively. By challenging this system I hope I have created an original piece that intrigues the reader. throughout the piece I have tried to maintain an atmosphere of consternation and to do so I have used many different grammatical and lexical techniques, for instance the use of certain semantic fields that are common with post cold war Russia such as ‘KGB’, ‘Prospekts’ and ‘Klashnikov AK-47’. I have also written using the semantic field of dirt and creating a feeling for the attitudes of the time. Again it can be shown here by ‘smog’, ‘sodden’ and ‘orifice’. Together these images conjure up the feeling of treacherousness and uneasiness. These words also relate to the sociolect of my political thriller enthusiasts that would have come across such words in the past. This gives them a sense of appreciation and common territory. I have chosen certain words to optimize the effect of connotation, exempli gratia I use the word ‘smog’ in place of fog or haze this is because smog has a polluted feeling, again reiterating the industrial power of Russia and the unwelcome feeling of wartime. This is complemented with the word ‘lingered’ – as opposed to ‘stayed’ – as an adverb to describe the smog. Not only have I used the emotive effects of connotation but combined with the use of figurative ornaments such as metaphors and similes; e.g. â€Å"like a sodden quilt†, and alliteration; e.g. â€Å"bald bloated body†, I have drawn a picture of â€Å"waking Moscow† through the lexis. To add some humour and variety into the piece I have played around with the pragmatics of certain situations, one of which is when Vladimir and Nikolai are talking, â€Å"he and I went back as far as Cuba and we had no secrets.† what I have tried to imply is the possibility of Vladimir being homosexual, which Nikolai picks up on and questions in the conversation. At the end of the piece I switch writing from third person into first person; â€Å"I can hear,† and â€Å"their souls†, this is so I can comment objectively on the events that had revealed themselves and stimulate the reader to resolve the story according to their own reading of it. The story is presented through narrative prose, using paragraphs to separate the text into more meaningful and accessible sections. Adjacency pairs determine the order of dialogue to replicate that of spoken text. Upon commencing this piece of writing it was my ambition to amuse and beguile an audience of comparable cultural elation to myself. The desire to write such a piece fired me with zeal and left my feeling rather ebullient. I feel I have successfully completed what I set out to do and by recording the response of my target audience to my final piece the consensus was that this was true.
